Race has always been a big issue in the American South, however rarely do these discussions involve the color brown. However that all changed with the 2013 Iron Bowl. Led by JR QB Tommy Castillo, 5-6 Auburn (they are an A- team I don’t know how they ended up with such a bad record) gave 10-1 and #8 ranked Alabama a run for their money. It was perhaps one of the most realisitc games I played, the D on both sides was tight, yet there were a couple big plays. I was most impressed with WR Anthony Thomas, his stats weren’t impressive, but the cocky kid from Virginia was making blocks left and right for the other WRs. More importantly however was the play of the latin americans on both sides of the ball. Seth Sanchez came up big in the 4th quarter and Castillo kept Bama guessing all game throwing for 321 yards.
With Auburn up 20-13 late in the 4th, Terrence Graves threw a TD pass to TE Eric Goolsby. Bama would stop Auburn on D and then set up the GW FG for a 23-20 Crimson Tide victory. Graves who was given the MVP and Sanchez consoled a broken hearted Castillo after the game, but Sanchez got him up and they did a victory lap around the stadium carrying a Mexican flag. To which a vocal minority of Auburn bigots yelled ” “¿Dónde puedo encontrar a los disidentes?” In tribute, Graves only answered post game interview question in Mexican spanish.
Key Stats
- Graves 11-17 200 yards 1 TD, 45 yards rushing
- Sanchez 97 yards 1 TD
- Wayne 3-62-0, Thomas 3-46-0, Richard 2-40, Goolsby 2-28-1
Auburn
- Castillo 17-26 321 yards 2 TDs
- Lee London 3-188-1 (this guy will be sick in the NFL: 95 OVR)
Bama is now 11-1 and is headed to Atlanta in their attempts for an SEC 3peat. They will play 10-2 Florida, who is coming off a 45-7 loss to undefeated Florida St. Winner most likely goes to the Sugar Bowl against West Virginia
